The Owner Pipeline
I coach client acquisition live every Tuesday for a global program of 800 students. This is what I taught this week.
When you cold call a business, the number you dial is almost never the owner's. It is the front desk. The person who answers cannot buy from you, and their job is partly to make sure you never reach the person who can.
New callers burn well over a thousand dials landing their first client, and a huge share of those dials die at that front desk. Every gatekeeper you remove compresses that number. So remove them before you ever pick up the phone: find the owner's name and the owner's cell first, with free tools, in a few minutes per prospect.
Get the owner's name
Most people skip this and it is the whole game. Free places the name hides: replies to Google reviews (owners sign their responses), the website's about page, the Facebook page transparency section, and the state's Secretary of State business registry. The registry works for any incorporated business in the country and takes about a minute.
Run a free people search
Take the name plus the city into the free people search sites: TruePeopleSearch, FastPeopleSearch, ThatsThem, USPhonebook, Nuwber. You are looking for a cell number tied to that name in that area. One site missing it does not mean the next one will.
Verify before you dial
Cross-check what the listing shows against what you already know: right city, plausible age, address that matches the business or sits near it. Prefer a number marked as a cell over a landline or VoIP. Thirty seconds of checking saves you from opening with the wrong Mario.
Call the cell
Now the phone that rings is in the owner's pocket, not on the receptionist's desk. If you truly cannot find a cell, use the hours trick: before 8 AM, around lunch, or after 5 PM, the person answering the main line at a small shop is very often the owner.
That is the whole pipeline: name, search, verify, dial. It is not glamorous and it is not automated. It is fifteen minutes of work that turns a cold call into a direct conversation with the one person in the building who can say yes.
This piece has no pitch. The full library of everything I teach is free in the vault, and it stays free.
